VITA RAMUS JOURNAL
Brass Becomes More Beautiful
with Time.
Not too ornate. Not too assertive.
Yet quietly present, changing its expression with the passing of time.
A reflection on why Vita Ramus chooses brass as its material.
By adding just a small touch of nature or quietness to the spaces where we spend our days, the atmosphere of everyday life begins to change. This is also why Vita Ramus chose brass as one of its core materials.
Brass is not a material that remains “finished” forever. It is a material that grows together with its owner. We believe its beauty lies not only in its new, polished appearance, but also in the depth and character that emerge over time.
The Quiet Appeal of Brass
Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. It has long been used in architecture, crafts, musical instruments, lighting, and many other objects, and is known for developing a unique patina the more it is used.
New brass has a soft golden glow. As time passes, however, its color gradually changes, taking on a calmer, amber-like character.
This transformation differs depending on where it is placed, how often it is touched, the way light enters the room, and the surrounding humidity and air. Like a plant, brass slowly grows into the space around it.
Aging Is Not Deterioration
When researching brass, you may often come across the word “discoloration.” But we do not see this change as deterioration. Rather, we see it as a beauty that can only be created through the passage of time.
Instead of keeping something flawless forever, there is beauty in allowing it to slowly change within daily life and become part of one’s own space. That is the charm of brass.
Vita Ramus single-flower vases are not complete only at the moment they are first used. We hope they become pieces that continue to grow quietly from that moment onward.
A Single Stem Can Transform a Space
Displaying flowers does not have to be something reserved for special occasions. A small branch found along the roadside, a seasonal wildflower, or a single flower chosen without much thought. By bringing in just a small piece of nature, a quiet change appears in the room.
It does not have to be a large bouquet. Even one single stem can be enough. That is why Vita Ramus values forms that do not speak louder than necessary.
To complement the flower while blending naturally into the space. Not to complete the room the moment it is placed, but to remain quietly present while leaving room for emptiness. That is the kind of beautiful object we imagine.
Brass and Japanese Living Spaces
Brass is a material that pairs especially well with Japanese interiors. Wood, stone, paper, clay. Japanese living spaces have long incorporated many natural materials.
Brass harmonizes naturally with these materials, fitting quietly into both modern interiors and traditional Japanese spaces. A solid wood table, a white wall, linen fabric, a calm entranceway, or a windowsill touched by morning light. With just a small brass single-flower vase, the space gains a quiet sense of depth.
Recycled Brass / Crafted in Japan
At Vita Ramus, some of our products are made using recycled brass. To make things that can be used for a long time while valuing limited resources is not something extraordinary to us. We believe it is a natural choice for the future of making.
Rather than emphasizing sustainability as a statement, we place importance first on creating objects people truly want to keep using for many years. To choose something you love and use it for a long time. We believe that such small choices can eventually lead to a richer cycle.
Becoming More Beautiful with Time
Brass is not a material that remains unchanged. Its color shifts with touch, it deepens with time, and little by little, it becomes part of someone’s everyday life.
To appreciate not only the beauty of something new, but also the way it will look years from now. That is the appeal of brass.
We hope Vita Ramus products quietly grow within daily life and become objects that feel more meaningful with time.
